18th Commemoration of the Genocide against Tutsi in North America

In partnership with the Embassy of Rwanda in Washington DC, the Rwandan Community in North America, is pleased to invite you to the North America’s 18th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. In addition to Survivors’ Testimonies, Commemoration Night, Walk to Remember and other memorial activities, this program will feature Mr. Carl Wilkens as the keynote speaker. Mr. Wilkens is the only American who chose to remain in Rwanda as the Genocide against Tutsi unfolded; delivering food, water and money to those in need. We will also have unparallel presentations on critical issues pertaining to the genocide including:


We will be joined by distinguished presenters, discussing the following critical issues pertaining to the Genocide Against Tutsi.

  • The Role of Media and Literature in the Genocide, with Dr. Koulsy Lamko (Writer, author of several books and articles on the Genocide against Tutsi; and former professor at the National University of Rwanda), Dr. Tim Gallimore (Consultant at CIS and former spokesman for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda prosecutor),  and Dr. Zachary Kaufman(Associate, Melveny & Myers, LLP and co-author of After Genocide: Transitional Justice, Post-Conflict Reconstruction, and Reconciliation in Rwanda and Beyond.)
  • Genocide Denial, with Dr. Egide Karuranga (Genocide survivor; President, Rwandan Diaspora in Canada; Professor, Laval University), Dr. James Smith (Chief Executive Officer, Aegis Trust) and Dr. James Waller (Author: Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Can Commit Genocide and Mass Killing; Cohen Chair, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Keene State College.)
  • The Post Genocide Reconstruction Efforts and Survivors’ Needs, with Dr. Margee Ensign (President, American University of Nigeria; Author: Rwanda: History and Hope), and Dr. Stephen Smith (Executive Director, USC Shoah Foundation.)
